What is unique about Autogenic Therapy?
The unique feature of AT is that you learn to access your
own innate self-healing power. AT enables
you, within moments, to bring the apparently involuntary stress
response of the autonomic nervous system under your voluntary
control. I
provide a safe and supportive learning environment in which
I encourage you to engage in your own process of change and
personal growth. The training course teaches skills enabling
you to tap into your own capacity for restoring balance of
'mind, body and spirit'. Whenever you feel stressed,
you have these tools available anywhere, for the rest
of your life. There’s no need for a therapist or any
equipment. In just a few minutes you can practice the exercises,
releasing your physical tensions and dipping into the exquisite
calm of your own ‘oasis of peace’.
What is the difference between AT and meditation?
There are close similarities between AT and various systems
of meditation. Indeed AT has sometimes been called a Western
form of meditation, for the state of passive concentration
attained during AT is the same or very similar to that described
in various systems of meditation where it might be called ‘mindfulness’. AT,
however, appeals to the Western mind because, unlike many forms
of meditation and yoga, it has no religious or cultural overtones
and requires no special clothing or unusual postures or practices.
AT arose in the West in a medical scientific context, out of
research into ways in which the self-healing processes of the
body and mind could be optimised. It does not have any framework
of spiritual or metaphysical belief, although of course it
does not preclude them. |
