What is Autogenic Therapy? - Part IV

What can I expect from the course?

You can take the eight-week course one-to-one or as a member of a small group. One-to-one sessions last 1 hour and group sessions last from 90 minutes to 2 hours. You will receive individually tailored instruction and a loose-leaf workbook. First you complete a questionnaire which you bring to the pre-course consultation lasting one hour where, together we can examine any issues relating to your physical or emotional health and how Autogenic Therapy might help you.

You do the exercises while seated or lying with your eyes closed. Each week, you learn simple formulas which you silently repeat while focusing your attention on different parts of your body. These suggestions induce the natural sensations associated with deep relaxation. You will learn to practise the exercises with “passive concentration” - a detached but alert state of mind in which you are unconcerned with results. It is a relaxed, mindful awareness in which you become the passive observer of your own reactions.

Between sessions you practise the exercises for about 10 minutes three times daily, and keep a brief record of your experiences. At our weekly session, we review together how you got on with the previous week’s exercises. I support and encourage you to engage with the subtle but powerful process of change in which your body and mind are restoring their natural balance.

You also learn brief exercises lasting from 20 seconds to 2 minutes to practise in stressful situations when you’re short of time.
And you learn simple exercises to allow the release and safe expression of anger, anxiety and grief, as well as various practical coping skills to improve your ability to handle stressful situations.
There is a ninth follow-up session 6 weeks after the end of the course.
